What is GetYourRefund and how does it work?
GetYourRefund was created to help people file their taxes for free. We build our products in partnership with the IRS, community tax preparers, and State tax agencies.
We currently offer two options, File with Help and File Myself. To use File with Help, you’ll:
- Answer a series of questions
- Provide ID and tax documents
- Connect with a tax team who will prepare your return for you and,
- Review it with you before e-signing and filing
To use File Myself, you’ll be connected to our free filing partner through a referral link. Regardless of the option you choose, you’ll have access to our support team along the way.

About File with Help:
You’ll connect with an IRS-certified tax team from the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) program. They will prepare and file your return and will make sure you claim all of the benefits you are eligible for. Your tax team will need to get in contact with you along the way, and will review your return with you before it’s filed. It can take two or three weeks to complete the process.
File with Help is great for people who:
- Need to file multiple tax years
- Had a big life change, like having a child or changing jobs
- Haven't filed taxes before and would like extra support
- Don’t have access to a computer
About File Myself:
We partner with the IRS to offer free tax filing software to those making less than $89,000. You’ll be directed to create an account using our referral link and will prepare your own tax return. You can reach out to us for support at any time. Many people start and finish in the same day, but you can take as much time as you need!
File Myself is great for people who:
- Have filed taxes before and only need to file a current year tax return
- Have had the same or similar jobs for the past couple of years, or receive W2 documents from your employer
- Need to file a 1040 NR (Non-resident) tax return
- Have access to a computer
