What happens if I submit my taxes after April 15th?

You must submit your documents by April 1st in order to meet the federal income tax filing deadline of April 15th.

You will only need to file an extension if you believe you will end up owing the IRS on your 2024 tax return, meaning you won't get a refund. If that's the case, you'll need to estimate the taxes owed and pay as much as you can before April 15th, to avoid penalties. Extension instructions and information are available on IRS.gov.

If you are interested in filing with help and can wait until after April 15th, we’ll have volunteer tax preparers available through October. If you need to file before April 15th, please choose the filing myself option.
