What is an IP PIN and how do I find it?

An Identity Protection PIN (IP PIN) is a six-digit number from the IRS that provides extra protection against tax identity theft.

The IRS provides an IP PIN to people who have been victims of identity theft, or who have opted into the IP PIN program.

If the IRS assigned you an IP PIN, then you must provide it when you e-file your tax return. If you cannot find this year's IP PIN, you can retrieve it online at Retrieve Your IP PIN.
