Will filing a tax return make me ineligible for other government benefits like SNAP or WIC?
Generally, tax refunds, including any tax credits or money you get back, do not affect your benefits. You can still qualify for or keep your benefits from many programs including:
- Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP and/or WIC)
- Supplemental Security Income (SSI)
- Medicaid and Medicare
- Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF)
- Housing Assistance
For programs that have asset limits, tax refunds are exempt from being counted in your total for one year.
