I’m scared I’ll get audited by the IRS!
Many people avoid filing taxes because they are worried about making a mistake or getting audited. It’s important to remember less than 1% of all tax filers get audited, and most of those audits happen by mail. Simple errors or filing out a form incorrectly by mistake will usually just result in an adjustment to your refund or a letter asking for clarification, not criminal charges or jail time.
If you receive mail from the IRS, it’s better to open, read, and try and understand the letter or notice, rather than ignoring it. Most letters or notices will include a phone number that you can call to get more information or make an appointment to get help in person.
In the unlikely event you do get audited, there are free options that can help you navigate the process including the Taxpayer Advocate Service at the IRS and more than 100 Low Income Taxpayer Clinics.
