The IRS contacted me. Is this a scam?
Scams are very common, so it’s best to be cautious if you’re contacted by the IRS.
The IRS usually starts by sending a letter in the mail and typically don’t call, email, or text without warning. They will never ask for payment using gift cards or wire transfers, require payment right away over the phone, or demand that you resolve issues in person. If you’re unsure if the contact is real, don’t share any personal info. The IRS has lots of information about warning signs and common tax scams.
