Help! My tax return was rejected. What should I do?
Don’t worry! Usually, if your tax return was rejected after you e-filed, there is an error or mistake on the return that can be easily fixed and your return can be resubmitted.
Usually, there is a specific error code with a short explanation of what you need to fix. You can search online or contact our support team by clicking “Chat with us” on the bottom of your screen if you need advice on what to do next.
Common errors include simple typos or mismatches with IRS data, including errors on the SSN or ITIN for you or someone else on your return, an incorrect IPPIN or AGI, or a missing form that should have been included with your return.
Sometimes your return might get rejected if you included a dependent that was already included on someone else’s tax return. The IRS won’t tell you who already included your dependent on a tax return but it’s most often someone you know, like another parent or guardian. You can find more about next steps to take on the IRS website.
