How do I get my employment documents like 1099 or W-2?
Depending on the type of work you do, your employer may provide you with a W-2 or 1099. There are lots of types of 1099s but the most common is the 1099 NEC.
Your employer is required to deliver or send all employment documents by the end of January. They may mail out your documents or provide them electronically. Companies like Uber, Lyft, and Door Dash may provide your documents in your app. You’ll need to log in to retrieve them.
If you haven’t received the forms you were expecting, the best first step is to contact your employer directly to request a copy. If it’s the end of February and you have contacted your employer and still don’t have the copies you need, you can call the IRS at 800-829-1040.
If you’ve tried both of these options and still don’t have your documents, or need information from older tax yearsyou can request a "Wage and Income Transcript" from the IRS. You’ll need to work with a File with Help site to be able to complete your taxes with a transcript.
