Why do you need my Social Security card? What if I need to replace it?
To prevent duplicate tax returns and identity theft, the IRS requires that we collect and verify a photo ID and Social Security Card or ITIN for anyone using File with Help even if you know your number. We can also accept official documentation from the Social Security Administration if it lists your name, full Social Security Number and a recent date. A photo of your Social Security Card or paperwork is fine to submit.
If you are using our File Myself service, we do not need to collect or verify your photo ID and Social Security Card or ITIN. You’ll enter and double check those on your own.
If you have lost or misplaced your Social Security Card you have to request a replacement card directly from the Social Security Administration.
